Our colleague Nina Stadler recently took part in the “Gordon Research Seminar and Conference on Green Chemistry” in Castelldefels, near Barcelona, and presented her research topic in the form of a poster. The conference, which was preceded by a seminar specifically for early-career researchers, focused on the theme “Sustainable Molecular Design and Scalable Green Chemistry Solutions”. Better late than never we would like to extend a warm welcome to two more colleagues at our institute.

The biochemists Patricia Janßen and Pia Franz have been part of our team for a few weeks now and

are carrying out their Master’s theses with us. We are delighted that they are both

that will emerge from their work.

This review article highlights the latest developments in biocatalysis using methyltransferases – a fascinating class of enzymes that catalyse highly selective methylation reactions. Particular emphasis is placed on chemoenzymatic syntheses of natural products. Furthermore, potential challenges and limitations in the practical application of these methods are also discussed.

At the start of June, it was that time of year again: the group met for their annual two-day retreat in Wermelskirchen. A big thank you goes to Annika, Daniel and Elias, who took charge of the organisation.

As usual, the retreat kicked off with presentations by the second-year PhD students. They presented their projects and drew up a detailed schedule and publication plan for the remainder of their PhD studies.

In it, Cornelius Pawlowsky presents his work under the title ‘Stereoselective Prenylation of Aryl- and Heteroaryl Halides: “γ-Selective Suzuki–Miyaura Coupling as a Tool for Asymmetric Csp²–Csp³ Cross-Coupling”’.

Our former trainee, Oleg Tokmachov, was awarded this month by the Aachen Chamber of Industry and Commerce as one of the best trainees. At a ceremony, a total of 17 trainees from the Düren district who had completed their training with a ‘very good’ grade were honoured. We would like to offer our warmest congratulations to them.

Today, Luise Lintel, a business chemist, successfully defended her Master’s thesis. Luise carried out her Master’s thesis on the topic of “Analysis and evaluation of flow chemistry as part of active ingredient synthesis in agrochemicals” at Bayer AG. We warmly congratulate her on this achievement and thank her for the fascinating insights into a subject that extends far beyond our day-to-day laboratory work.

This year, we once again hosted Girls’ and Boys’ Day, which was superbly organised and supervised by our PhD student Viktoria Warth, who once again showed great dedication.

After a brief tour through the lab, during which the participating pupils were able to get a taste of the day-to-day work of our PhD students, they got straight down to some hands-on experimentation. The production of fragrant fruit esters was very popular – the banana and apple flavours in particular were a big hit.

On 17 April, Tim Moritz Weber completed his PhD with the thesis titled “Total Synthesis of Clickable Natural Product Derivatives and Manufacturing of Conjugates for Target-Specific Application of Potential Drugs”, graduating summa cum laude. Over the past few days, we have had the pleasure of welcoming several new faces to the institute. A total of seven undergraduate and postgraduate students have joined us and are now beginning their time at IBOC. Our work-study trainee, Tim, is also starting work on his undergraduate thesis.

They are currently attending our induction module, where the foundations are laid and they gain initial insights into methods and procedures, before subsequently devoting themselves fully to their research projects.
