The Institute

The Chair of Bioorganic Chemistry as an Institute of Heinrich-Heine University Düsseldorf is located at the area of research center Forschungszentrum Jülich (FZJ). IBOC is embedded into the close network of the following departments:

In the year of 2005, Jörg Pietruszka, who habilitated in Stuttgart and was recently appointed at the HHU, became head of the newly founded Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry, which is located at Research Centre Jülich. From the very beginning, he promoted close cooperation with neighbouring institutions, the Institute of Molecular Enzyme Technology (IMET) and the Institute of Biotechnology (IBT). After the merger of the two Research Centre Institutes IBT-1 and IBT-2 to form the new Institute of Bio- and Geosciences (IBG-1) in 2010, the long-standing cooperation was further strengthened in 2013 with the appointment of Prof. Dr. Jörg Pietruszka and Prof. Dr. Karl-Erich Jäger (IMET) as part-time directors of IBG-1.

Students at IBOC benefit from an interdisciplinary education through courses and doctoral programmes offered at the institute. This is ensured not only by the advantageous networking of the institutes at the Research Centre, but also by our broad interest in scientific topics and, last but not least, our connection to renowned networks such as the CLIB-Graduate Cluster Industrial Biotechnology, the CLIB Competence Centre Biotechnology, iGRASPseed, BioSC or BioRiver e.V.

Employees of the institute work in an extremely pleasant and constructive environment. Regular seminars and staff meetings contribute significantly to successful theses and PhD projects. Annually recurring events, such as the internal retreat in the Eifel, joint barbecues and of course the Christmas party (also popular amongst alumni) promote the collegial cooperation that distinguishes and has always distinguished the IBOC.
