If you have a heart attack, you probably won't see a cardiologist right away, but it's reassuring to know that there are people with first aid skills nearby. The same applies to first aid for mental health.

Mental health is the foundation for well-being, performance and good interpersonal relationships in everyday life (including at work). In stressful times, when faced with challenges in their studies or career, but also in their private lives, many people reach their limits – and sometimes go beyond them. It is especially important then to receive support or to know how to help others. That is why we offer first aid for mental health to all colleagues and students.

First aid for mental health is a prevention and support service that aims to identify mental health issues at an early stage, respond appropriately and provide rapid assistance in an emergency. Just as with physical emergencies, rapid support can be crucial in mental health crises.

Mental illnesses are common: Almost everyone knows people in their social circle who are affected by mental health issues. Depression, anxiety disorders, stress reactions, or addiction problems can affect anyone.

Early detection helps: Recognising the signs and acting early can help prevent the condition from worsening and improve the chances of recovery.

Low-threshold services: A supportive environment strengthens the sense of belonging, promotes well-being and can make a decisive contribution to recovery.

Opportunities for discussion: Trained colleagues offer confidential discussions, but these are not subject to professional confidentiality.

Personal counselling: Our team provides confidential support to colleagues and students, helping them to find individual ways of coping in stressful situations.

Information material: We provide brochures, checklists and online content that educate about mental illness, warning signs and ways to get help.

Networking with specialist services: If necessary, we refer you to professional therapists, counselling centres or other support services – discreetly and without red tape.

Our services are aimed at all students and staff, regardless of age, field of study, profession or personal background. Whether you need help yourself or think that colleagues need support – you are very welcome!

We are located on the campus of the Research Centre in Jülich. The initiative to equip people with knowledge of first aid for mental health originates from the Chemistry Department of Heinrich Heine University. The support services are aimed at employees of the university, the research centre and also our students.

Listening: We take you and your concerns seriously. You are not alone; many people suffer from mental health issues, and a large number of them can find relief. Sometimes, just having an open conversation can help. We strive to create an atmosphere that is free of judgement, open and confidential.

Support: We are happy to help you classify your problem, support you in finding professional help and research measures that will give you back your resources. It is important to us that you are the decisive person in this process. You shape the way forward – with our support, if you wish.

We are not doctors or therapists: We do not make diagnoses, we do not make prognoses and we do not provide therapy. However, we see ourselves as a low-threshold point of contact when professional help may not be immediately available.

Recognising limits: Some situations will also be stressful for first responders. We will clearly communicate our limits and ask for your understanding. In any case, we are happy to help you find professional help.

  • Severe mood swings, withdrawal or behavioural changes
  • Sleep disorders or concentration problems
  • Loss of interest, listlessness or feeling overwhelmed
  • Increased alcohol or drug consumption
  • Open or covert references to hopelessness or suicidal tendencies

We want to encourage a culture of openness around mental health. The goal is to reduce stigma, raise awareness of mental health issues, and enable mutual support. Everyone should know that it's okay to need help – and it's strong to accept it.
