Benedikt Baumer's doctoral defence took place on 19 February 2024. He began with a confident presentation that provided a comprehensive overview of his work and concluded with a very successful discussion. During his time at IBOC, Bene focussed on the use of ADHs in flow chemistry. In particular, he established an efficient cofactor recycling system in a closed-loop process. The 36th Irsee Natural Product Symposium is currently taking place in the beautiful Irsee Monastery. The symposium is organised annually by Dechema and always features top-class speakers from the exciting field of natural product research. This year, our PhD student Sebastian Myllek presented his poster entitled "Towards the Atroposelective Synthesis of Natural Biscarbazoles via Chirality Transfer" and represented our institute very well. Thank you very much for this.

Yesterday, chemist Dominic Badermann successfully defended his Master's thesis, which he wrote at IBOC. He dealt with "Investigations of the chirality of substituted dibenzophospholes".

The SecMetEnz team has been strengthened: Catharina Gronkowsky, who previously completed her research internship with Marcel Schatton, is starting her Master's thesis in Thomas Classen's group this month. In future, she will be working on halogenases and thus strengthening the enzymological part of the group.

As the new year begins, we welcome three new colleagues to our institute. Tim Leipertz will start a dual apprenticeship and initially support our PhD student Cornelius Pawlowsky in the lab. Sophie Helgers is attending the natural product synthesis module under the supervision of Lea Hoppe, while Stina Hench is starting her Master's thesis.

In her current publication "Application of the C3-Methyltransferase StspM1 for the Synthesis of the Natural Pyrroloindole Motif", Mona Haase presents innovative methods for the targeted synthesis of pyrroloindoles. These structural motifs are present in a variety of natural products with different biological activities.

The work of Moritz Klischan et al. dealt with the synthesis of a library of non-natural 8,8'-biflavones. To overcome the problems of chemoselectivity, he synthesized the key intermediate acetophenone dimer via a one-step oxidative coupling process. Finally, the synthesis could be performed on an 8 g scale without column chromatographic isolation, synthesizing 14 flavones and 13 biflavones according to the established protocol.

The 7th BioSC Symposium took place on November 6 and 7, 2023 in a pleasant atmosphere at the LVR-Landesmuseum in Bonn. The topics were anything but old-fashioned and addressed highly topical issues relating to the development of a sustainable economy. In addition to exciting presentations, there was also the opportunity to exchange ideas at scientific posters.
