Last Thursday, we had the pleasure of celebrating two successful doctoral examinations. Both Marcel Schatton and Frederike Weber successfully completed their doctorates. We would like to congratulate them both!
Marcel defended his thesis entitled ‘Indole derivatives in the synthesis of natural product-inspired active ingredients’. As part of his doctoral studies, he succeeded in the total synthesis of Lansai B, which also resulted in a publication. Marcel enriched everyday life in the laboratory not only professionally, but also personally. With his humour and his open and helpful manner, he was a positive influence in the laboratory for many. His skills in simultaneous column chromatography (up to three columns at once!) and his co-founding of the legendary Italian and French extraction will also remain unforgettable.
Frederike also successfully completed her PhD with the title ‘Synthesis of naphthopyranones as potential drug candidates’. During her time at the institute, she was always a patient and helpful contact person, explained complex issues in an understandable way and always had an open ear. With her pragmatic approach and commitment – including the organisation of Enzymtech I – she was a valuable part of the institute. Her research also resulted in a publication on the total synthesis of semi-viriditoxin and semi-viriditoxin acid and the investigation of their biological activity.
We congratulate Marcel and Frederike on this big step and wish them both all the best for their future professional and personal careers!
